Retired IAS PC Gupta, who is a former chief executive officer of the Yamuna Expressway Authority and was wanted in a land scam of Rs126 crore, has been sent to 10-days police remand by an anti-corruption court on Saturday. Police said that Gupta was arrested from a temple in Datiya in Madhya Pradesh late on Friday night and produced in front of the court on Saturday.

According to the police, Gupta was produced before the court and asked for 14 days police remand for interrogation in order to collect more information about the alleged scam.

Police said that after hearing the arguments from both the sides, the court has given 10 days to police for interrogation. Police will now look into the matter and interrogate the CEO about the fake companies and people associated with the scam.

Sources in police revealed that seven fake companies were formed in which Gupta's nephew, his wife and other relatives were made directors as YEIDA had to acquire land for building roads to link Yamuna Expressway. These companies purchased land from farmers of 7 villages of Mathura, which was later acquired by YEIDA at double the price.

"The purchased land was of no use for the project but the said companies made huge money."

Gupta was arrested from Datia, Madhya Pradesh on Friday for his involvement in a land scam of over Rs 126 crore, during his tenure as CEO of YEIDA 2015-16.

A senior police officer said that they had been chasing Gupta since the day the FIR was lodged. As he was absconding, Gupta first travelled to Lucknow from where he went to Udaipur in Rajasthan. After Udaipur, his location was found to be in Surat and then in Jaipur. From Jaipur, Gupta travelled to Madhya Pradesh's Guna and finally to Datia.

"Even as police were closely monitoring him, Gupta gave many a misses to them. There was also a concern that he might flee the country," said a senior police officer.

When the divisional commissioner of Meerut Dr Prabhat Kumar, chairman of the YEIDA, had ordered an inquiry on the basis of a complaint, the matter came into light.

The first report of the inquiry was submitted in 2017 and thereafter another report was submitted this year, In the reports, some irregularities had been found and a case of fraud was lodged against Gupta and his relatives at Kasna police station of Noida on June 3 on the directions of the commissioner.
