The AAP government’s much hyped helpline — 011- 42400400 — launched during the first phase of the odd-even scheme in 2015, to help commuters in trouble, has been lying defunct for two years. It is only now that the city government has woken up to revive the helpline and set up a full-fledged 24x7 call centre to handle complaints.

The helpline, launched by former transport minister Gopal Rai amid much fanfare was meant to help commuters facing trouble by fleecing auto-rickshaw drivers, surge pricing by taxi aggregators and polluting vehicles, among others. However, the helpline died as the road-rationing scheme ended.

The government’s transport department in June floated an e-tender in this regard.

“The plan is to have a dedicated call centre to run the helpline for providing service for lodging of complaints and providing general information about vehicle registration, driving license, cluster buses, taxis and auto-rickshaws to the public at large,” said a senior government official.

The call centre will be required to attend to complaints for all kinds of vehicles and automatic allotment of a complaint number. It will also take complaints of vehicles emitting excess smoke, the official said.

The helpline will also provide general information to callers about vehicle registration, driving license and other related business.

The status of complaints will be submitted to the designated officer of the transport department, who will be monitoring the process.

“The call centre will be providing a monthly report of complaints received and the status thereof. They will be required to give feedback to the complainants of the action taken. At least ten operators in different shifts will be attending the calls. The service provider will make available details of all complaints online to the Helpline Cell in the Transport Department,” the official said.

A helpline by itself will not help commuters. AAP needs to work with civic agencies especially during the monsoon season to ease traffic
The Delhi government has not announced fresh plans as to how they will help commuters. If that is the case, the helpline will just be a place where one can register a complaint, but will not solve problems
