Govt plans to almost double passenger capacity at airport

The Centre on Wednesday said that it was working on a plan that would almost double the annaul passenger handling capacity of IGI airport to 109.33 million passengers. The Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) is operated by Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) —a joint venture between GMR, AAI and Fraport AG. Minister of State for Civil Aviation Jayant Sinha gave details of the expansion plans of IGI airport while replying to a question in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.

Sinha said development works for the airport include the expansion of Terminal 1 and 3, construction of a new Terminal 4 and new runway, among others in three phases starting from 2017 till 2034.

"The updated master plan envisages expansion of passenger handling capacity of IGI Airport from the existing 62 million passengers per annum to 109.33 million passengers per annum in a phased manner by way of both Airside and Terminal side developments," he said.

The development works planned are based on traffic triggers, optimum utilisation of capital expenditure and other factors. "In compliance with the provisions of Operation, Management and Development Agreement (OMDA), DIAL has reviewed and updated the Master Plan of IGI Airport, New Delhi in 2016 in consultation with the Airports Authority of India, Sovereign agencies providing reserved services at the airport and with other stakeholders," the minister said.

Meanwhile, DIAL on Wednesday said that IGI has been awarded as the 'Best Airport in India and Central Asia' by Skytrax at the World Airport Awards.
