The Delhi government has entrusted Delhi Tourism and Transport Development Corporation (DTTDC) with the task of providing school uniforms studying in state-run schools, after it failed to provide uniforms to 15.5 lakh students by the first day of academic year

In a meeting held on December 6, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia directed the Managing Director, DTTDC, to come out with a plan of action to provide uniforms to students in kind at the earliest.

Till last year, the Delhi government was giving cash to the students for uniforms. But in an affidavit filed in the Delhi High Court, the AAP government has informed that it asked the DTTDC to provide the uniforms in kind instead of money.

"So far, we have been doing the cash transfer for the uniforms.Going forward, the DTTDC will be entirely taking care of the matter," said a senior Delhi government official.

The AAP government also mentioned the revised rates of uniforms for the session 2017-18 for 15.5 lakh students stating that the entire cost of providing the dresses would amount to Rs 221.03 crore.

The directions come after the Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal held a meeting on September 1 last year where he directed that from the next academic sessions, the Directorate of Education (DoE) to ensure that each student should receive a complete set of uniform, text books and writing material on the first day of school session replacing cash distribution.

"From the next academic year, DoE shall ensure that uniform, text books and writing materials to the students in government schools shall be given in kind and not in cash. Each students should mandatorily received a complete set of uniform, text books and writing on the first day of the school session," the CM had said in the meeting.

The meeting was conducted by the CM to review the status of implementation of Right to Education Act, 2009 where he expressed concerns on more than 2 lakh pending cases where the money which is paid to the parents for uniform, text books and writing materials were not remitted.
