Delhiites can breathe a sigh of relief as the AAP government, after three long years, finally gave a go-ahead to the procurement of 2,000 buses on city roads. On Friday, the Delhi Cabinet approved a proposal to get 2,000 buses of which 1,000 will be for the low-floor state run Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) while the rest will be cluster buses run by the Delhi Integrated Multi-modal Transit System (DIMTS).

Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot tweeted the development, "Delhi Cabinet today approved a proposal to procure 2,000 buses, including 1,000 for the state-run DTC, to strengthen public transportation in the national capital. These non-AC, standard-floor buses will be rolled out within a year."

The introduction of more buses and strengthening public transport had been a key poll promise of the AAP government but matters had not fructified. Tenders for the long-pending 1,000 DTC buses had been floated several times over the past two years with little result. There had been a few bottlenecks earlier in the procurement due to issues between buyers and sellers as well as companies not showing interest in the tenders over maintenance costs, the transport minster added.

The procurement of buses will also mean a revival of the DTC, which has not had a single new bus to its fleet since 2010. The DTC will also now maintain its own fleet, as opposed to earlier when the buses were maintained by the company which was supplying the vehicles. DTC officials believe that direct responsibility will result in less breakdowns on the road and other advantages.
