Learning its lesson from last year’s mayhem, when the monsoon wreaked havoc on city roads and traffic, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government has made elaborate arrangements this year.

Last year, the Arvind Kejriwal-led government had faced major embarrassment when waterlogging was reported in the city in July while Kejriwal was on a political tour to Goa, Gujarat, and Punjab. With the Chief Minister assuring on Friday that the government was fully prepared to deal with the crises of water logging and dengue this monsoon, the situation seems different this year.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said, “If waterlogging is reported from any drain or road under its jurisdiction, the Public Works Department (PWD) will be responsible. The department has also been asked to identify waterlogging-prone areas and conduct inspections.”

He also said the department will establish a call centre, which will receive complaints regarding waterlogging, starting June 15. The PWD is in charge of 1,260 km of road in the Capital, while the rest fall under the jurisdiction of the three municipal corporations.

On Thursday, minister Satyendar Jain chaired a meeting with officials of different agencies to take stock of the monsoon preparedness in the Capital. All agencies, including the three municipal corporations, DDA, PWD, Flood and Irrigation, and DJB have been directed to complete monsoon preparedness work by June 7.

Similarly, various other agencies have been directed to keep their pumps for water removal ready by June 7. According to the PWD, as many as 1,447 pumps will be kept ready to be used by different agencies.

Jain has also directed the PWD, DDA, and civic bodies to finish desilting of drains in areas under their jurisdiction by June 7. More importantly, Lieutenant Governor (LG) Anil Baijal has constituted a high-level committee to undertake desilting of drains and open manholes in the city.

The committee has prepared a plan to desilt all 163 major drains in the city by June 15. The committee will coordinate the desilting work with different agencies, to ensure the work is done, he said.
