Goons rough up AISA president Kawalpreet Kaur, three others; five arrested

Three students were allegedly thrashed after they raised an alarm over indecent remarks by a group of four boys at Delhi University (DU) All India Student Association (AISA) president Kawalpreet Kaur in Northwest Delhi's Vijay Nagar area on late Saturday night. The police have arrested five people in connection with the case.

According to the complaint filed by the students, they were standing near a shop in the locality when a group of three-four boys came and passed comments at Kaur. On resisting they started beating the man. It was not much later when the boys called the other members of their group who had pistols with them. The students were beaten at gunpoint and were life threats.

"A police control room call was made around 12:30 am at the Model Town police station regarding a quarrel at Vijay Nagar. On reaching the spot, we found that three persons namely Jatin, Rishabh and Ankit have sustained grievous injuries. They had already been taken to Deep Chand Bandhu Hospital in Ashok Vihar," said a senior police officer.

Based on the complaint, an FIR was filed at Model Town Police Station and a case was undertaken against unknown accused.

"On the basis of their statements and the CCTV footages recovered from the spot, a case under sections 308,323, 341,506 (ii), 509 and 34 of the IPC was registered. Teams were constituted to nab the culprits at the earliest. Following which, five persons have been arrested. Gautam Sonkar, Kundan, Ayush Bhatia, Manish and Shubham while the sixth accused, Pawan is still absconding," said a senior police officer.

In light of this incident, hundreds of students took out a protest march from Vijay Nagar to Model Town Police Station demanding action.

"We believe that such acts of goondaism can't be tolerated in the campus and police the must ensure security and safety for the students," said Kaur.
