Students across the country will now learn how to become responsible digital citizens, besides getting lessons on cyber-bullying and crimes as Google joins hands with the National Council of Educational Research (NCERT) to devise a new curriculum on these lines. The integrated course will be implemented in more than 1.4 million schools across the country from next academic session in April 2018.

Students from Class I - Class XII, in a four-pronged approach, will be taught how to remain safe on the internet, use it smartly, leave positive digital footprints and be future ready. They will also learn through structured classroom modules about the social, ethical and legal aspects of internet safety.

Talking to DNA during the official announcement of the new course on Safe Internet Day here on Tuesday, Sunita Mohanty, Director, Trust and Safety, Google India shared that they have devised different courses for varied age groups, all with the sole objective of making internet experience a positive and fulfilling one for students.

The first part of the programme will focus on young kids who will be introduced to basic tools of the net and exposed to the web world. "The curriculum is structured to match the intellectual and curiosity needs of the different age group of the children. For example, in lower classes, students will focus on engaging with technology and learning the use of basic digital tools. In middle classes, students will be introduced to basics of the internet, concepts of account safety and distinguishing good content from bad," Mohanty further said.

As they advance through their classes, they will be taught more advanced topics such as privacy, device management, intellectual property and reputation management. Finally, as they become ready to graduate as digital citizens, they will be prepared with online financial literacy and cybercrime concepts so that they are future ready.

Mohanty also shared that the initiative will be on parents too, this year. As part of its pilot, the internet giant engaged 600 mothers in cities like Delhi and Hyderabad to teach internet safety.
