Mankhurd Police on Wednesday arrested the man who until now was perceived to be a good samaritan, who tried to save accident victim and 65-year-old renowned cyclist Ashok Khale.

The said samaritan was the complainant in the case and had got Khale hospitalised but the probe revealed that Khale had died after being hit by his vehicle.

According to the police, on November 5, one Bandra resident Moiz Shaikh had found Khale unconscious at Sion-Panvel Highway and had got Khale hospitalised at a Navi Mumbai hospital. Shaikh got a complaint lodged against an unidentified motorist at Vashi Police Station in this regard.

However, later the case was transferred to Mankhurd police station as the accident spot was under their jurisdiction.

On November 11, Khale succumbed to his injuries at Bombay Hospital after which the Mankhurd Police had registered a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder against unknown persons and began the probe.

"When we visited the accident site we found several discrepancies in Shaikh's statement. On sustained questioning Shaikh broke down and admitted to having rammed his vehicle into Khale's cycle, resulting in severe injury. He told us that he was too scared to tell the truth," said Sanjay Y Vernekar, senior police inspector, Mankhurd Police Station.

The cycle, which was missing from the scene of the accident, has also been recovered by the police.

On November 05, around 6 am Shaikh who was travelling in his SUV was heading towards Panvel when a few meters ahead of Vashi bridge on the Sion-Panvel highway, his vehicle hit Khale's cycle, who was going to Khopoli from his Dadar residence.

Khale, known as the King of Ghats, was the winner of national championships in 1979 and has several state and national medals for cycling to his name.

He was known to have ridden the Khandala Ghat section in record time during the Mumbai-Pune national race. A recipient of the Shiv Chhatrapati state sports award, he had also participated in Giro d'Italia.
