The Aviation-Airport Training arm of the GMR Group signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Rajiv Gandhi National Aviation University (RGNAU) on Monday to launch a first-of-its-kind PG diploma course in Aviation and Airport Operations for graduates aspiring to join the industry.

The objective of the MoU was to facilitate and promote professional aviation studies and provide in-depth knowledge of functioning of an airport, in particular, and the Aviation subsets, in general. The comprehensive academic, technical, and practical curriculum for students is drawn from highly technical International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) documents and manuals. The practical training will be done under the supervision of experienced mentors in a live airport environment.

The one-year course includes a mix of theory and practical, with on-the-job training at the state-of-the-art GMR airports in Hyderabad and Delhi.

The MoU was signed by PS Nair, whole-time Director, GMR Airports Limited, and Air Vice-Marshal Nalin Tandon, AVSM, VM (Retd), and RGNAU Vice-Chancellor, in the presence of the Minister for Civil Aviation, A Gajapathi Raju, and Union Secretary for Civil Aviation, Rajiv Nayan Choubey.

Commenting on the development, Nair said: "It is a moment of great honour that the GMR Aviation Academy has signed an MoU with RGNAU to provide the much-needed PG diploma in Aviation and Airport operations. It is estimated that the Aviation industry in India will require close to 1 million skilled personnel over the next 10-15 years, which will pose a great challenge if adequate number of people are not trained in this highly specialised and complex area."

RGNAU V-C Nalin Kumar Tandon said the Indian civil aviation sector is currently growing at an approximate rate of 20 per cent and is expected to be the third largest market by 2020. "India undoubtedly has the potential to become a significant part of the global supply chain. This will, in turn, steer the demand for trained professionals in the field of aviation," he said.
