Girl molested by Delhi cop given Rs 5 lakh as relief

A minor girl who was allegedly molested by a Delhi Police constable has been paid Rs 5 lakh as relief by Delhi Government on recommendations of the National Human Rights Commission.

According to an NHRC release today, Delhi Government has paid Rs 5 lakh as monetary relief to the 12-year-old girl who was molested by a police constable in the Ridge Road area in New Delhi district on February 10, 2012. The constable was later arrested and suspended. A case was registered against him under Section 354 of the IPC at Mandir Marg police station. 

The Commission, during the course of inquiry, found that the constable was apprehended by the uncle of the victim with the assistance of some labourers when he molested the girl. They handed him over to the police at Mandir Marg station. The Commission has observed that the constable had prima facie attempted to outrage the modesty of the minor girl for which he was an accused in the FIR No. 22 dated February 11, 2012. He had also been suspended from the service. "Therefore, prima facie, being a public servant,he abused his position/power and violated the human rights of the minor girl for which the state was liable," the statement said.

As per the Commission's recommendations, Rs 5 lakh was paid as relief to the girl and the amount was put in a fixed deposit in her name and the interest earned on it would be used by her authorised legal guardian for her welfare.  The principal, together with any accrued interest, would be at her disposal when she becomes an adult.
