Ghaziabad: 28-year-old Maulvi killed over Rs 5,000; two arrested

A 28-year-old Maulvi was allegedly murdered by two men over the payment Rs 5,000 for betting. The police have detained one of the accused on Sunday.

According to the police, the deceased has been identified as Hafiz Imran, who had gone missing on June 8. His body was recovered from a forest area in Farrukhnagar area of Sahibabad.

According to the family member of the deceased, Imran went out in the morning to teach Namaz on June 8. "He used to return home at 11 pm every day, but on that day he did not return. We searched for him all night but didn't get to know anything about their whereabouts. We then informed the police around 4 am on June 9," said Hussain Mohammed Istiyak, a cousin of the deceased.

A missing complaint was lodged and teams were formed to look for him, the police said.

According to the police, Imran's mobile was placed on technical surveillance. "It was found that someone had put a SIM card in his mobile. Following which a team was sent to the location and a man was caught. It was revealed that he had bought the mobile from a man from Farrukhnagar," said a senior police officer.

A team apprehended the man and after rigorous interrogation, the man accepted to killing Imran with one accomplice.

"Imran's body was recovered in a forest after the accused revealed the location. The two accused have brutally attacked the deceased with a heavy object like a stone on the head. The body has been sent for post-mortem," said a senior police officer.

According to the police sources, there was a dispute between Imran and both the accused over Rs 5,000 for betting. After a heated argument, they killed Imran. The other accused is still absconding and the police are looking for him.

"The dispute over Rs 5,000 led to the murder. An accused has been arrested and is being questioned," said Vaibhav Krishna, Senior Superintendent of Police, Ghaziabad.

Imran lived with his family in Ghaziabad and is survived by his wife and a three-year-old daughter and a one-year-old son. Imran used to teach Namaz at a mosque located in an Attor Nagla.
