A 35-year old man died after a major fire broke out at a garment factory in Central Delh's Karol Bagh area in the wee hours on Saturday. Police said that a labourer died of suffocation; he could not escape when the fire started. The building did not even have a valid Non Objection Certificate (NOC) for fire safety standards.

While it remains to ascertained what started the fire, it is being assumed that a short circuit could be the likely cause.

According to fire department officials, the fire broke out around 4:50 am on Saturday in a factory located on Tank Road in Karol Bagh area. The factory, where jeans were manufactured, had around five labourers sleeping inside it when the tragedy struck. While four managed to escape, the victim, identified as Jumman, got trapped near the staircase.

"The fire control room received a call at 4:50 am and the fire was doused by 5:10 am. After that, cooling operations were underway and the victim's body was recovered. Four fire tenders were rushed to the location to douse the fire," said a fire official.

The fire started on the first floor of the building. Jumman who was sleeping on the second floor was found unconscious on the staircase there.

The factory is spread over an area of around 50 square yards and does not have a single safety mechanism installed within. There were no proper fire fighting equipment or a possible emergency exit.

Babul Gupta, who runs a shop adjacent to the place where the fire broke out, said: "All of us were asleep, when around 3:30 am we heard people screaming. I came to my balcony and saw heavy plume of smoke and flames engulfing the garment factory. I came downstairs and alerted my family, who rushed to save themselves."

A case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered. Further investigations are underway.

Last month a fire at an illegal run cracker factory claimed the lives of 17 persons who were trapped inside when the fire broke out. Police officials had arrested the factory owners as the factory was running without illegally and did not even have a valid NOC. Most of the persons who died in the incident were women.
