Piles of garbage and cow dung greet residents and passersby every day at Om Vihar Phase I in Palam Vihar Extension. The waste which is dumped in vacant plots here is not only leading to an unbearable stench but is also a major health hazard. The shocking thing though is that it is nothing new. Residents here say that they have been complaining to the civic bodies as well as police for the past four years. However, no action has been taken so far.

The issue assumes special importance around this time, as the onset of the monsoon ensures that diseases such as dengue and chikunguniya will be a cause for concern. Open garbage will also breed unsanitary conditions where mosquitoes are likely to thrive.

As a local resident, Vinod Upadhya says, "We have a mountain like structure of cow dung around six feet above the ground. This not only gives birth to insects and spreads diseases but also allows pigs to roam in the streets. Thanks, to this our children cannot play outside.

Diseases aside, local residents say that no one wants to visit their area because of the stench. Ajay Singh, a resident said, "We have also made a consent list of local residents consisting of 50 people, submitted the list to municipalities and to the DCP's office but nothing has happened so far.

Residents also allege that the garbage menace is due to the dairy owners. RWA president, Gaje Singh Kablana said, "We have warned dairy owners not to dump garbage and cow dung on vacant plots, but still they continue to do so. Dairies also need to be shifted outside residential areas. We have written letters on the same to the Muncipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG), yet the MCG has not taken any action.

When contacted, an MCG official denies Kablana's claims. "So far nobody has registered any complaint with us but if they do so we will definitely take action," he said.
