Gangster gives cops the slip, shoots, but held

Interrogation revealed that in 2006 Mullah along with his associates had committed several robberies in many areas of the Capital: Romil Baaniya

A trap laid by police for a wanted gangster led to high drama on the streets of southeast Delhi’s Okhla area during the early hours on Friday. The accused, who was trying to escape police, shot at police constables. Luckily, the constables escaped as they were wearing bullet proof jackets, but the police did not get bogged down and ensured that the gangster surrendered.

The accused, who was carrying a cash reward of Rs 50,000 on his name, has been identified as Kasim Mullah (36), a resident of Mohallah Uparkot in Bulandshahar, Uttar Pradesh.

“On Thursday, information was received by special staff southeast district that Mullah, who is involved in several heinous crimes, will reach Okhla Mandi late night to extort money from someone. The police team laid a trap and Mullah, as informed, arrived the spot on a two-wheeler, bearing registration number DL 5SAT 6032,” said Romil Baaniya, DCP southeast.

Officer said that while Mullah was taking exit from Okhla Mandi on Captain Gaur Marg, the police team intercepted him and asked him to stop. “Seeing police presence, Mullah sped towards Modi Mill flyover, following which the police team started chasing him. Seeing him run out of reach, the police team hit the suspect with their vehicle on which he opened fire,” he said.

The accused fired total four rounds before he was apprehended, out of which two bullets hit the bullet proof jackets of sub Inspector Yogesh Kumar and Assistant Sun Inspector Sukhbir. The DCP said that police team fired back at the accused and after a brief encounter he was nabbed. A.32 bore pistol along with four live cartridges was recovered from his possession, police said.
