Gang of MTNL cable wire thieves busted

The accused would use JCB's to dig out the underground cable wires. Thirteen cases of MTNL cable thefts have been resolved with the arrests

Five persons, including an ex-employee of Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL), have been arrested for underground cable thefts.

The accused would use JCB's to dig out the underground cable wires. Thirteen cases of MTNL cable thefts have been resolved with the arrests. They all posed as BSES officials when they committed the crime, police said.

According to the police, a case was registered on the complaint of an MTNL employee who informed them about a case of theft of the underground MTNL cable wires on December 12. The police had earlier arrested Mukesh Rai and Rajesh Kumar on the day of the incident only, however, the main accused was absconding.

The police had also seized a Haryana bearing JCB, 127 feet of cable wire, the iron wire used for the traction of cable and other theft equipment.

A dedicated team under the supervision of ACP Anand Kumar Mishra was formed to investigate the case as many cases of MTNL cable wire thefts were reported in the area.

Acting on information, Shahid alias Khurana was arrested from Sarai Kale Khan bus stand. On investigation, Shahid revealed that he runs a gang for committing theft of MTNL underground cable. Later on, his four other associates identified as Mursalin, Tosif, Anwar and Shahnawaz were also arrested from a flat in Sarai Kale Khan in Delhi. Police also recovered ten feet of MTNL cable wire from them.

Khurana informed the police that he worked as a cable jointer in MTNL for around ten years. During his service, he learnt the process to root up the underground cable. Later on, he made a gang and started committing thefts for which he roped in Kumar who provided him the JCB. They later sold it to a scrap dealer, Aarif, who is currently absconding.
