A gang of cable thieves, which targeted the newly inaugurated Magenta Line of the Delhi Metro to steal power cables, was busted on Wednesday. Police have arrested four members of the gang and recovered two country-made pistols with two live cartridges of 8mm, 7.65 mm and cables of different dimensions of 3.3 kV, 25 kV & 33 kV from their possession.

According to the police, the accused have been identified as Dilshad (22), Ali Hasan (23), Imran (27) and Saddam (24). Dilshad and Hasan were former labourers of a project under the Delhi Metro.

"In the last one month, many incidents of cable thefts were being reported, due to which the DMRC had been facing difficulties to continue the operations on the Magenta Line. On March 7, a DMRC official, Praveen Gupta registered five cases of cable theft online allegedly to have occurred from January 23 to March 5," said Pankaj Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police Metro.

"Following secret information, Dilshad, Hasan and Saddam were arrested from near the Kalindi Kunj depot. At their instance, Imran, who is the receiver of stolen cable, was also arrested," said Singh.

During their interrogation, Dilshad, the mastermind, revealed that he along with the members used to work as a labourer at the Kalindi Kunj depot at the time when Magenta Line was under construction and was therefore aware of the entry and exit gates.

"Ali and Dilshad allegedly engaged some local persons from the Shram Vihar Jhuggi by luring and included them into their gang and started stealing cable wires. After cutting the cable from the track, they would hide it either in the big drain beneath the track or in the forest which is also adjacent to the track. Thereafter, they would cut the big cable into pieces and with the help of Saddam, owner of Mahindra Tempo, deliver the stolen cables to Imran, who then would unwrap the cable and dispose copper to another person," said Singh.

Police said all the members used to steal iron ore or scrap from the DMRC project in connivance with the security guard. Since they worked during the construction of the Magenta Line, they all were aware how to decamp with the cable wires.
