A 35-year-old man was allegedly attacked with a sword and then shot dead following an argument with his neighbours in south-west Delhi’s Dabri area in the early hours of Sunday. The deceased, Raju, was a resident of the JJ cluster in Bindapur and had four criminal cases registered against him, including one related to gambling.

The south-west district police had recently launched a crackdown on gamblers in the area, and reportedly the accused, Nawab Khan and Aftab, suspected that Raju had tipped off the police regarding their activities. Both are currently absconding.

“Nawab Khan is a bad character of Dabri area and Aftab is a bad character of Jahangirpuri area. Both have nearly 16 cases registered against them, including those for gambling, attempt to murder, and under the Excise Act. On December 31, a case of gambling was registered against Raju as well and the process to declare him a bad character was underway,” said DCP (south-west), Surendra Kumar.

According to the police, after the crackdown, gambling activities in the area stopped for a while. Khan and Aftab suspected that Raju told police about their activities, and Raju had similar suspicions about the two. They even had an argument regarding the issue a few days ago.

Then late on Saturday night, while Raju was returning from a relative’s wedding, the duo stopped him. They attacked him with a sword and then shot him twice. A case of murder has been registered and the accused will be nabbed soon, police said.
