Expressing concern about the fact that the percentage of working children between 5-9 years of age has increased by 37 per cent from 2001-2011, the Delhi Police on Monday decided to observe the World Child Labour Day by forming a human chain at the India Gate.

The event was held in collaboration with NGO Child Rights and You (CRY) and the Border Security Force (BSF). The initiative was taken in order to spread awareness about child rights and to urge people to say 'No' to child labour.

On this occasion, the Delhi Police stated that India was home to more than 33 million working children below the age of 18, and 10.13 million of them were below the age of 14 years. The officers said that the census figures showed that the number of working children between the age of 5-14 years in the country, despite best efforts, has decreased by a mere 2.2 per cent per year between 2001 and 2011.

Senior police officers present on the occasion said the concept of their human chain was aimed at making India a child labour-free country. More than 500 BSF personnel, along with 400 Delhi Police officers, civilians, and members from CRY, joined hands to form the human chain and to raise voice against child labour.

They also pledged to not employ children below the age of 18 years and to ensure that every child got treated equally and enjoyed rights as citizens of India, the officer said.

Special Commissioner of Police Dependra Pathak said, "The Delhi Police have many concerns pertaining to children in distress and kids being forced to work. The Delhi Police are committed to make the city encouraging, and protective of its children."

He further said the Delhi Police will extend all support to CRY to eradicate child labour, both by mobilising public opinion and by using legal provisions.
