Two days after a mother was caught on CCTV throwing her child off the staircase of her house, a five-month-old girl was found abandoned in a park behind a temple in the jungle area of southeast Delhi's Pul Tughlakabad, late on Friday evening.

The incident came to light early on Saturday morning when a passerby heard the child crying and, on checking, found a baby girl wrapped in a blanket — lying on the side of the road. The person then alerted the temple's priest who informed the locals and the police about the matter.

"A PCR call was received after which the child was taken to the AIIMS Trauma Centre for a medical check-up. Doctors declared her condition to be out of danger. Locals were questioned but it could not be ascertained who had left the girl on the secluded stretch. CCTV footage from the area was also checked to identify the persons who had abandoned her," said a senior police officer.

Police registered a case under relevant sections at Pul Prahladpur Police Station and the matter is under investigation. Police have also roped in an NGO to take care of the infant. However, on late Saturday evening the child's parents were arrested.

DCP (southeast), Romil Baaniya said that after extensive questioning the girl was identified as Nagma. During the probe, a clue lede the police to the accused persons and the team of PS Pul Prahladpur arrested the — girl's mother Mobina Khatoon and stepfather Irshad Ali — residents of Sangam Vihar area.

Baaniya said, "Mobina Khatoon was married and gave birth to Nagma in September 2016. Her husband Raju left her and went to Nepal. She later married Dilshad Ali, a labourer, and was living with him and his four children (two daughters and two sons). The couple said that Ali was irritated with this infant girl as she used to cry a lot. He had even threatened at times to kill the child and also pressurised mobina to abandon her."

The child will be produced before the Child Welfare Committee on Monday, both the accused will be produced before a court on Sunday.
