Students in Haryana have reasons to be happy as the Haryana government will soon open a university in Gurgaon. Haryana Chief Minister, ML Khattar made this announcement during a function at government Girls College on April 11 after meeting students and various stake holders of the city.

Speaking with iamin, a Corporation official said, “It will take some time in getting the work started, but CM has made announcement and now it’s certain that Gurgaon will have its own university,” said a Corporation official.

As per the sources, the draft for the university has already been prepared and Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) will provide land for the university in Jharsa village on NH-8. Jharsa village is located in the heart of the city easily accessible to the residents of both new as well as old Gurgaon city.

People in and Gurgaon had long been requesting for a university so that students don't have to always go out for higher studies. Absence of a government university has resulted in mushrooming of many private universities in the city, which are very expensive for majority of the people here.

“It’s good to have a university here because it would allow us to study further, as my parents wouldn’t have allowed me to go out for post-graduation. At present, I am in first year and I think by the time, I will finish college, the university will become operational,” said Shanti Yadav, a student in government college for girls.

Although presently Gurgaon city has three government colleges in which nearly 18,000 Gurgaon students study, lakhs still head towards other options. “If the state university will have professional courses, it would help us in a great deal. At least good students will get admission in a government institute and will get quality education at an affordable price,” Aniket Singh, a student of a private university in Gurgaon, said.
