While travelling in the Delhi Metro is convenient and makes you feel safe, however, one thing you might want to be careful about is your belongings. The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has apprehended 100 women pickpockets every month in 2017, at an average. And, the interesting revelation is that the number of women pickpockets held is 13 times more than the male pickpockets.

A data released by the CISF, 1,222 women were apprehended in 2017 for pickpocketing in the Metro, while only 89 men were found indulging in the crime.

According to the senior CISF officers, it was after receiving a number of complaints regarding thefts and pick-pocketing in the Delhi Metro that a special drive was undertaken, along with stringent measures to ensure such practices are controlled. The CISF's women commando group'Kaali'and'Anti Theft Squad'were also made a part of this special drive to keep a vigil on these women pickpockets.

"Following a special drive, CCTV footage from various stations was scrutinised where such incidents with similar modus operandi were noticed. On scrutiny, the identity of pickpockets was disclosed and following regular drives and surprise checks by the Anti-Theft Squad and Kaali, resulted in the apprehending of a number of women who had been operating in the garb of travelling in the Metro," said a senior CISF officer.

Further questioning revealed that the modus operandi these women adopt helps them hide among the crowd on the Metro stations. These women enter the Metro legally after purchasing tokens but then split into groups of 8-10. They would then zero down on a person carrying valuables and enter a crowded Metro train."While some surround the target, others engage him/her and enact to seek a help or start an argument with them. Meanwhile, the other members commit theft taking advantage of the crowd. All of them would then de-board the train at the next stations, in groups of 2-3, to avoid suspicion of theft," the officer added.

In many cases, jewellery items and cash were recovered from them. All of them were handed over to Delhi Metro Rail Police for further investigation.

CISF AIG and PRO, Hemendra Singh said that the force's Anti Theft Squad is a big deterrent for such miscreant groups and it also motivates the complainants to lodge FIRs as most of them avoid the procedure due to legal hassle and lack of time."The red-handed apprehension of 1,222 women is a result of tight surveillance and our capacity to act instantly. The CISF has majorly put to rest the menace of thefts in the Delhi Metro and drives are further being strengthened to eradicate it completely. We want to create a deterrent for such miscreants," Singh said.
