A family of three was found dead under mysterious circumstances in outer Delhi's Begumpur area on Sunday morning. The bodies of a woman and her 14-year-old daughter were found on the bed. They both had strangulation marks. Her husband's body was found hanging in the room. Police said the incident took place some time on Saturday.

The deceased were identified as Rajesh Gupta, his wife Uma and their daughter Shweta. A suicide note was recovered from Rajesh's pocket. "The note stated that the three had made a suicide pact and that nobody must be blamed for the step they took. It also stated that the police need not harass anyone regarding this," a senior police officer said.

Prima facie, it appeared that Rajesh first strangled his wife and daughter, and then hanged himself, police said. "The room in which they were found was locked from inside. So far, we do not suspect any foul play, but a conclusion can be drawn only after the autopsy," the officer said.

According to the police, the incident came to light at 9.15am on Sunday. A police team reached the spot and broke open the main door. The three were rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors pronounced them dead on arrival.

"At 9.15am, their neighbours raised an alarm when they found the house locked from inside and none of them answering the phone. The family used to be up early and do their morning prayers around 8 am every day. When nobody opened the door till 9 am, neighbours got concerned and asked Babloo, who lives with his family on the first floor, to check on them," said M N Tiwari, DCP (Rohini).

Babloo, who then asked the neighbours to call the PCR, said: "The room was locked when I came down. I pushed it with some force and it opened. I was shocked as I saw Gupta uncle hanging, and his wife and daughter lying unconscious on the bed."

Rajesh owned a tempo, which was driven by some other person. Uma was a housewife and Shweta was a student of Class IX at the Indraprastha School. The family had been living in the two-storey building for the last two years, but they had lived in the locality for more than a decade.

The bodies have been sent to the local mortuary for post mortem. "We are investigating the case from all angles and are waiting for the post-mortem report," a senior police officer said.
