Unhappy with Congress state President Ajay Maken over distribution of tickets on reserved seats for the municipal corporation elections, eight former party legislators met on Monday to discuss the issue, and decided to approach the central leadership. The meeting took place at a coffee house in Connaught Place.

Sources said former legislators Nand Kishore, Devendra Yadav, Rajesh Lilothia, Raj Kumar Chauhan, and four others were present in the meeting. "They were of the opinion that the state leadership, headed by Maken, was giving reserved seat tickets to outsiders," said a source, adding that they were very apprehensive.

During the meeting, the former MLAs said the new members getting the tickets will take several months to gel with the party workers in their areas and to connect with the local people. They further expressed anguish that many local leaders, who had been working in various pockets of the city for long, were ignored by the state leaders.

The eight leaders said if the local leaders were ignored, they will approach the central leadership over the issue.

Of the total 272 wards in three corporations, 114 are reserved for women and 22 are reserved for Scheduled Caste (SC) category candidates. In the SC category, another 24 seats are reserved for women. Of these 272 seats, 104 each are with the North Delhi Municipal Corporation and South Delhi Municipal Corporation, while the East Delhi Municipal Corporation has 64.

Senior Congress leaders, however, maintained that they were selecting candidates in a fair manner.

The grand old party has received more than 12,000 applications for 272 wards and they will announce the names of candidates soon. The party leadership has hinted that all sitting councillors in the three municipal corporations are likely to get tickets this time as well. Congress has 88 councillors in the three corporations. The party has set up a call centre to cross-check the aspirants' claims and credibility among party workers.
