Former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit may be appointed as the new Delhi Congress president after Ajay Maken's resignation from the post on Friday, a recent report suggested. Ever since Dikshit remarked in December 2018, that she would accept the party line over a possible alliance with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the city, she was seen as making a comeback in the active politics of the state.

Amid speculations of an alliance between the AAP and Congress ahead of the 2019 Parliamentary elections, Dikshit's comment had assumed speical significance. According to sources, neither AAP nor Congress has denied rumours of the two parites joining hands before the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

Earlier, Dikshit had taken a belligerent stand against the AAP leadership over its tussle with Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal. Dikshit, who has served as the Chief Minister of Delhi for three terms, has been missing from the city's political scene since she lost power to AAP in December 2013.

Maken, who had replaced Arvinder Singh Lovely as the city's Congress chief after the party was decimated in state polls, was believed to have differences with the central leadership over a possibile alliance with the AAP. Thought to have resinged over health grounds, Maken has been a two-time parliamentarian and former union minister. This is the second time Maken has resigned from the post of the city's Congress chief. He had resigned after the party did not do well in the civic polls in May 2017 but, changed his decision after being asked by the-then vice-president Rahul Gandhi to continue.

Apart from Sheila Dikshit, the Congress leadership is said to be considering the names of Yoganand Shastri, Rajkumar Chauhan, Haroon Yusuf and Chatar Singh for the post, the report further added.
