In a shocking incident, an 86-year-old woman, mother of senior diplomat and India's Ambassador to the United States, Navtej Singh Sarna, was brutally beaten up on Saturday at her home in Greater Kailash Part II area of Delhi.

Police sources say the woman was assaulted by her grandson Karan Dev Chopra, over an alleged property dispute.

The accused, who is an advocate, was arrested by the police and a case of attempt to commit culpable homicide and criminal intimidation was registered against him at the Chittaranjan Park police station.

Romil Baaniya, Deputy Commissioner of Police (southeast), said that the elderly woman's grandson had been pressurising her to transfer her property in his name and that was believed to be the reason for the assault.

"The woman was punched and then pushed to the ground by him after which she suffered serious injuries on her forehead, eye, knees and other parts of the body. She was then admitted to Max hospital in Saket where she is undergoing treatment. We registered a case on her complaint and arrested her grandson," said Baaniya.

A senior officer said that the matter came to the police's notice after they received a call from the hospital. A team then reached the hospital and recorded her statement. The woman told the police that she was attacked by her grandson around 9 am following an argument over transferring her property in his name.

"He pinned her down and repeatedly punched her on her forehead, face and other parts of the body. When she screamed for help, he fled the house. A few hours later, her other grandson arrived and found her bleeding. She was then taken to the hospital," added the officer.
