A 23-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly harassing and threatening a student of St Stephen's College. Police said the accused, Aman Singh, was infatuated with the victim, a language student at the prestigious institution

According to the police, Singh and the complainant, a resident of west Delhi's Hari Nagar, met during a festival in the Mata Sundri College. The two became friends but the accused, a Paschim Vihar resident and a BTech graduate from the Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU), started exhibiting possessive behaviour. The girl then stopped talking to him.

Singh then started sending messages to her and her family members, and many of these contained sexually explicit remarks. Then in October last year, he created a fake social media profile in the name of the victim and started posting indecent remarks and pictures. He even purchased a SIM Card with an international number to harass her.

"He bought a United Kingdom (UK) number and also created a fake WhatsApp group, where he added the girl's family members. Since the two families knew each other, the the accused had all the contact numbers. The girl has claimed that her freedom was severely curtailed and she went into depression due to this continuous harassment," a senior police officer said.

Since the two families were acquainted with each other, they tried to settle the issue amicably, but despite several requests, Singh did not stop any of these activities. In fact, he took yet another SIM card from a friend to send messages to the girl. The complainant said his family also lied to her, claiming that he had shifted to Bangalore and was not using his mobile phone. He was later arrested from his home itself.

DCP (west) Vijay Kumar said: "Singh was recently placed with an IT firm in Bangalore. Three mobile phones with national and international SIM cards and laptops were seized from his possession."

Meanwhile, a case under Sections 419 (punishment for cheating by personation), 420 (cheating), 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and 66C and 66D of the Information Technology Act has been registered at the Hari Nagar police station. More sections are likely to be added during the course of the investigation.
