Elderly woman found dead in Hauz Khas Village lake

A 62-year-old woman, who had gone for her routine morning walk on Friday, was later found dead in the District Park lake in Hauz Khas. The police do not suspect any foul play in the matter. The deceased was identified as Veermati Singh. The police received a PCR call at 10.40 am. The officers from the nearby Safdarjung Enclave police station reached the spot and sent the body for post-mortem.

Deceased Veermati was a resident of the Hauz Khas Village area. Her late husband was a DTC employee. Her son Ashok Kumar and brother-in-law Ramesh identified the body, after confirming that she had gone for her daily walk around 9 am.

"The family members do not suspect any foul play and no injuries were found on the body. The apparent cause of death seems to be drowning," a police officer investigating the case said.

"It could be a case of suicide or an accident. Inquest proceedings have been initiated to ascertain the exact cause of death. Security guards of the park and other morning walkers will be questioned," a senior police official said.

The body has been shifted to a mortuary in the government hospital and post-mortem will be conducted on Saturday. The police have lodged a case under Section 174 of CrPC.
