An elderly man raped his mentally challenged neighbour, aged 21, in Shahadra on Sunday afternoon. Police said the accused took the woman to his cycle-rickshaw garage nearby and raped her. He was arrested after the victim disclosed the matter to her family.

According to the police, the victim is undergoing treatment at a Shahdara-based hospital. Her father is a rickshaw puller, who had taken a rickshaw on rent from the accused. On Sunday around 11.30am, the accused saw the victim wandering outside her house. Her father had gone to work, and her mother, who works as a domestic help, had also left.

"According to the initial probe, on the pretext of getting the victim food and sweets, the accused took her to his garage. Then he locked the room and started touching her inappropriately. When the woman objected and started to raise her voice, he covered her mouth and assaulted her. He then raped her and warned her against revealing the matter to anyone. The accused then left for his home," a senior police officer said.

The matter came to the fore when the victim, who was in a state of shock, complained of abdominal pain to her mother. The family took her to a nearby doctor, who raised suspicion of rape. Police were informed and during questioning, the victim revealed that the accused forced himself upon her.

"After proper medical verification, the accused was arrested from his home. Counselling sessions were arranged for the victim and a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered at the Farsh Bazar police station. Further investigation is underway," the police said.
