President Pranab Mukherjee said on Wednesday that the educational institutions in India should encourage its students towards research and innovation, in order to prepare the youth for the challenges of the job market.

"It is very important to create an atmosphere of research and innovation as well as to inculcate a spirit of questioning in our educational institutions," he said, while addressing students during the Foundation Day function at the St Stephen's College.

"In the coming years, more youngsters will be added to our population. It's very important to provide them with necessary skills and training. Otherwise, the demographic dividend will change into a liability," he said.

The President further said: "Every year in Rashtrapati Bhavan, we organise an innovation festival. The entire objective behind the festival is to encourage the participants to come forward with innovative ideas to solve their day-to-day problems."

Stressing that Indian institutions should take the international rankings seriously, Mukherjee said: "I have been informed that when entries for these international rankings come to the Indian institutes, they do not provide the required information in a proper manner. We have excellent faculty members and brilliant students. We don't lack in merit as well. Still, not many institutes make it to the international lists."

He also urged the students to contribute towards the welfare of the country. "I urge the students that whatever position they occupy in society, they should contribute towards the welfare of people and society," he said.
