Following the death of a two-year-old girl, who accidentally fell into an open drain in northeast Delhi's Maujpur area, the East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) has formed a three-member committee to inquire into the matter.

According to a senior official, the committee has been constituted to fix responsibility of erring officials in the incident that took place near the gate of an MCD primary school in Sabji Mandi. The committee comprises sanitation superintendent I and II, Shahdara(north), and assistant engineer (maintenance-IV), who have been asked to submit a report within three days.

Besides, the Paryavaran Sahayak of Ward 40 has been placed under suspension with immediate effect for dereliction of duty, and the SI and the ASI have been issued show cause notices.

The government has demanded a strict action against the officials and staff responsible for the negligence that led to the child's death and that EDMC formulate guidelines to prevent such untoward incidents in future.

"We have assured the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillors at EDMC that those found guilty in the matter would be strictly dealt with," EDMC Mayor Neema Bhagat said.
