The East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) has stopped disposal of silt at a site in Geeta Colony. The silt, removed by various agencies from drains, will now be disposed at a new facility at Singhola village near Singhu border.

According to the sources, disposal of silt at the facility in Geeta Colony has been discontinued due to litigation.

"All agencies concerned, including the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), Delhi Jal Board (DJB), Irrigation and Flood Department have been notified to send the silt from drains and otherwise to the new facility at Singhola," said a senior EDMC official.

The disposal of silt in East Delhi became a problem as its dumping at Ghazipur landfill site was prevented after the collapse of a portion of the dump last year in which two persons were killed.

Later, the facility was readied at Geeta Colony but the locals resorted to protest against it. A delegation of Delhi Congress leaders had recently met Lt Governor also to stop the dumping of silt at Geeta Colony.

Recently, the Delhi High Court stayed dumping of waste by the east corporation at a site near the Yamuna. A bench of acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar noted that the EDMC, before using the 11 acres land near Geeta Colony, failed to conduct an environment impact assessment.

The high court acted on the petition filed by residents of nearby localities who were most affected by the daily dumping. Appearing for the residents, advocate Manoj V George highlighted that on a land adjacent to a thickly populated area at a residential colony and in close proximity to the river bed, the corporation has started dumping garbage in the only lung space available in the area, putting the health of the residents at risk and also completely ruining the river bed.
