East Delhi: Bride receives bullet injury in celebratory firing

Sources says the accused was a friend of the groom, Lakshman

A 19-year-old bride sustained bullet injuries during celebratory firing at her wedding in Mandawali in east Delhi on Thursday night. Police said that prima facie it appears to be a celebratory firing. The woman was treated after which she completed her marriage rituals.

According to the police, the victim, identified as Pooja, was getting down from the stage when the incident took place. The assailant was identified as Rinku, a neighbour of the groom, and a resident of Geeta Colony. Sources said the accused was a friend of the groom, Lakshman.

"The incident occurred at around 12 pm when the injured bride Pooja was attending the 'varmala' function with Lakshman at revolving stage. As she was stepping down from the stage, a man attending the marriage opened fire resulting which she received a bullet wound in her left leg and collapsed on the ground," said a senior police officer.

The family members of the bride stated that they initially thought that someone has burst firecracker but after few minutes they saw their daughter was lying in a pool of blood as she was about to leave the stage when a bullet hit on her right side ankle.

"She was rushed to the LBS hospital by the family members. We had requested our relatives to not do any firing during marriage function. We heard two firing took place within a matter of few minutes one in the air and the other hit my sister," said Jaggo Devi, Victim's mother DCP east Delhi Pankaj Singh said the accused is at large.
