The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation started with its pilot Last Mile Connectivity with a fleet of e-rickshaws plying on Dwarka metro stations circuit from Friday. Lt Governor of Delhi Anil Baijal flagged off around 100 such rickshaws, called SmartE, from Dwarka Sec-10 Metro station to boost the last mile connectivity service in Dwarka sub-city for Metro commuters. These vehicles will be plying from eight metro stations of Dwarka sub-city namely, Dwarka, Dwarka Sec-14, Sec-13, Sec-12, Sec-11, Sec-10, Sec-9 and Sec-8 from 6 am to 11 pm.

"This is for the first time that the e-rickshaw facility has been rolled out for Metro stations in Delhi region covering Dwarka sub-city. Initially, 100 SmartE e-rickshaws are being introduced into service which will gradually be increased to 200 in the coming weeks. A Charging Station for 100 electric vehicles has also been set up by SmartE to ensure seamless service throughout the day," an official of DMRC said.

These GPS enabled e-rickshaws come armed with a slew of features like covered cabin and full front windscreen, providing last mile connectivity within an area of 3-4 km around Metro stations. To facilitate the service to the maximum number of people, the DMRC has kept fare at a nominal price of Rs 10 for the first 2 km and Rs 5 for every subsequent kilometre. Commuters can also book vehicles through the SmartE app and pay digitally for their rides. Depending upon the success of the project in this area, DMRC will replicate services on the similar format in other areas of the city. The rail body is also working on enabling Metro Smart Cards for fare payment in these electric vehicles.

Speaking on the occasion, the LG Najeeb Jung said, "DMRC stands out for its environment-friendly initiatives. This eco-friendly initiative of e-rickshaws at the Metro stations will enable the commuters to prefer non-polluting public transport modes over personal vehicles."

As on date, about 500 SmartEs are already providing last mile connectivity service from Metro stations in Gurugram (HUDA City Centre, M G Road & Sikanderpur) and Faridabad (Escorts Mujesar, Neelam Chowk Ajronda& Bata Chowk) and is being used by more than 50,000 passengers daily.
