The members of the Congress-backed National Students' Union of India (NSUI) have written to the Delhi University (DU) Vice-Chancellor over the post of general secretary of the student union being "illegally" occupied by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP)'s Mahamedhha Nagar.

The admission of Nagar, presently general secretary of Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) and a member of RSS-affiliate ABVP, was cancelled from law faculty's centre-1 on December 7, 2017, after she failed to meet the required attendance.

"According to Lyngdoh Committee guidelines, the students union/representative body so elected shall only be comprised of regular students on the rolls of the institution... And, since Nagar's admission has been cancelled by the faculty of law, she can no more enjoy the position," wrote Meenakshi Meena, who was NSUI's candidate for the same post this year, in the letter.

"I request you to immediately take action against Nagar... Kindly hold her from entering the office premises of DUSU building. Also, issue a circular informing the students and public at large that she should no longer be referred as the general secretary of DUSU," she added.

Speaking to DNA, Dean of the faculty of law, Ved Kumari also confirmed that Nagar is no more a registered student with them. "According to Bar council's guidelines, the admission of a student will be cancelled, if he or she gets detained in the first semester. Nagar's admission was cancelled by the faculty after she failed to meet the required attendance in her first semester," she said.

However, Nagar, who has been in the eye of the storm for allegedly being involved in violent clashes that broke out at Ramjas College last year, said that the matter is sub-judice. "My attendance was tempered by the faculty to meet the malafide intentions of the Dean. I took the matter to the Delhi High Court and I will not give up on my position till the court announces its decision," she said.

Mocking the NSUI, Nagar said, "These words are ironically coming from the students' body whose presidential candidate itself is facing criminal charges."
