The student wings of Congress and BJP on Friday declared their candidates for the four crucial posts in the keenly-contested Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) elections, which are scheduled to be held on September 11.

The Congress affiliated National Students Union of India (NSUI) has fielded Pradeep Vijayran, a final year LLB student for the post of President, while Prerna Singh of Ram Lal Anand College was selected as the Vice Presidential candidate, NSUI's Amit Sehrawat from Faculty of Law and Deepak Chaudhury from Hansraj college have been fielded for the post of secretary and Joint Secretary respectively.

BJP-backed Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has declared Satender Awana from Department of Buddhist Studies as their Presidential candidate and Sunny Dedha from Faculty of Law as the Vice Presidential nominee. Those nominated by ABVP for the post of Secretary and Joint Secretary include - Anjali Rana from Lakshmi Bai college and Chatrapal Yadav from Department of Buddhist Studies.

The Aam Aadmi Party's students wing Chhatra Yuva Sangharsh Samiti (CYSS), which is making its debut in the campus politics, had announced its candidates last week. Their panel includes Hitanshi Chauhan from Satyavati College, Garima Rana and Rahul Raj Aryan of Hindu College and Kuldeep Bidhuri of PGDAV College.

Another new entry in DUSU polls this year is Shiromani Akali Dal's youth wing, Students' Organisation of India (SOI). They are yet to announce their nominations.

Left-backed All India Students' Association (AISA) had yesterday declared Sheetal Bhopal (Hindu college), Sudhanshu Shekhar (Aurobindo college), Ravi Kumar (Ramjas College) and Abhinav Kumar (Deshbandhu college) as its candidates for the polls.

Meanwhile, the process of withdrawal of nominations concluded today and the Delhi University declared the final list of candidates in fray. "A total of 35 candidates are in fray for the four posts of DUSU office bearers. While 9 candidates are in race for the post of President, 8 nominations have been validated for the post of Vice President," said DS Rawat, DU faculty and Chief Election Commissioner for DUSU polls. "The number of students contesting for the Secretary and Joint Secretary post are 10 and 8 respectively. A total of 134 candidates withdrew their nominations and overall 12 were rejected during scrutiny," he added.

The polling will be in two phases (morning and evening) on September 11, followed by counting of votes on September 12 after which results will be announced.

DUSU is the representative body of the students from most colleges and faculties. Apart from DUSU, which is an umbrella council, each college also has its own students' union for which they hold separate elections. Last year, the DUSU polls were swept by BJP-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) trouncing Congress' National Students' Union of India (NSUI) to bag all four positions.
