Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR) got a respite from the day-long scorching heat as a dust storm, that was followed by light rains, brought down the mercury by about ten degrees. This was the third instance of a thundershower and dust storm in this week after the ones witnessed on Sunday evening and in the wee hours of Wednesday. Thursday's dust storm, though, was not as strong as the earlier ones.

The observatory at the Palam airport recorded a wind speed of 68 km/hour and similar wind speed was recorded at Safdarjung, weathermen informed. "There was a dust storm accompanied by gusty winds and light rain followed," said RK Jenamani, Head of India Meteorological Department (IMD), Delhi Airport.

On Thursday, the maximum temperature was 41.8 degree Celsius and humidity level was 40 per cent in the morning and 23 per cent in the evening. After the dust storm and drizzle, the temperature dropped to 33 degree Celsius from 43 degree Celsius at Palam, Jenamani said.

There is a strong likelihood of another dust storm of moderate strength on Friday evening or night in Delhi-NCR, the IMD said in its forecast on Thursday.

IMD added that many parts of India will see thundershowers and gusty winds in the coming days due to favourable conditions. "Under the influence of a western disturbance and easterly winds at lower levels over northwest India, scattered to fairly widespread precipitation very likely over Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan." It also said that there will be thundershowers accompanied with gusty or squally winds over East India and South India in the coming days.

There will be a marginal respite from the heat as no heat wave is expected in the coming days, but the maximum temperatures will hover around 40 degree Celsius and above over plains in North and Central India.
