Delhi police have arrested two cheats for duping elderly people on the pretext of giving bonus offers on their insurance policy.

The accused have been identified as Madhuvendra Singh alias Sanjay (31), a resident of UP's Etah, and Renu Pandey (29) alias Rashi, a resident of east Delhi's Mandawali. Police claimed that they have targeted hundreds of people so far and have duped people of more than Rs 7 crore.

"A case was filed against them two years ago in Maurya enclave police station. A team was formed to gather information and the duo was finally arrested with the help of technical surveillance. Police have seized account statements of 13 companies. Several forged documents of ROC, IRDA, banks and other government agencies have been seized as well," said Aslam Khan, Deputy Commissioner of Police, North west.

Police said the cheats used to call the persons in the guise of IDRA officials, saying their insurance policy has been selected for bonus. They would then say that to avail the bonus, money needs to be transferred to crack a code set by the company. Fifteen bank accounts were used by the two to get the money transferred. These accounts were opened in the name of companies and firms.

The accused had collected data on policy holders while working with some reputed insurance companies in the past.

"During interrogation, the accused revealed that they wanted to make fast money, and so targeted elderly people because they are less suspicious. A team was hired to make phone calls to the clients where they advised the victims to surrender their policies. The con men allured them by saying they would provide bonus before the policy matures," said Khan.
