DU student alleges rape, found hanged to death

Almost 24 hours after lodging an FIR alleging rape, a 21-year-old Delhi University student is said to have committed suicide at her house in north Delhi's Roop Nagar area on Sunday. A suicide note from her house alleges that the perpetrator had raped her on the pretext of marriage and later fled. No arrests were made till late Wednesday evening.

According to the police, the incident took place on Sunday when the woman, a student of B.Com final year from the School of Open Learning, was found hanging from the ceiling fan in her room by her family. She was taken to a hospital but was declared 'Brought dead'.

"A suicide note was found in her possession by the crime and forensics team that was rushed to the spot to probe the matter. The note said that she was committing suicide after a man, who had promised to marry her, had a physical relationship with her and then fled. Investigations also revealed that another FIR was lodged by the girl at Model Town police station in northwest Delhi against the accused for rape," said a senior police officer. The deceased is survived by her parents and four brothers. Police said the complaint of rape was also registered on April 9, after which it was reported that the girl had committed suicide. A post-mortem confirmed death by hanging, they said. "The girl and the man were apparently in a relationship. Deceased's family members and friends are also being questioned to know more," the police officer said.

Jatin Narwal, DCP (North), said that special teams of Roop Nagar police, where a case of suicide has been registered, are searching for the accused, who is suspected to have left the city. "We have possible leads and the accused will soon be arrested," he said.
