DU starts online registration for PG courses

The varsity has concluded registration process for 60 UG (merit-based) courses, and has received over 3,20,000 applications

The Delhi University (DU) concluded its registration for 60 undergraduate (merit-based) courses on Monday. By then, the varsity had received over 3,20,000 applications, with BA (H) English, B Com and BA (Prog) remaining the most sought-after courses.

According to a statement released by the university, 1,57,690 men, 1,24,709 women, and 83 others applied for this academic session. "As many as 12,520 students have applied under the sports quota, while 19,951 are looking to make a mark through extra-curricular activities," the statement read.

The highest number of applications have been received from the Delhi region (1,20,514) followed by Uttar Pradesh (62,024), Haryana (38,702), and Bihar (10,783). "Around 1,34,847 applications of the total 3,20,262 were for BA (Prog), followed by English (H) (1,24,220), B Com (1,04,975), and Political Science (H) (9,549).

"This time, getting a seat in English (H) and Political Science (H) will be a huge task as a large number of aspirants have applied for the courses," he said. The first cut-off list for the undergraduate (merit-based) courses will be released on June 20.

Meanwhile, the varsity kicked off the online registration for 72 postgraduate courses, including M.Phil and PhD, on Monday. The registration will continue till June 22 and the entrance exams for these courses will be held between July 1 and 6.

"Applicants who wish to be considered for admission in the Non-Collegiate Women's Education Board (NCWEB) and the School of Open Learning (SOL) may opt for the same at the time of registration. There will be no separate registration for that," the varsity stated in a release.

As many as 50 per cent of the seats in postgraduate courses will be filled by direct admission on the basis of merit, while the remaining 50 per cent will be filled through entrance exams, and group discussion/interview.

Results of all entrance exams will be declared between July 7 and 12 and the first admission list will be declared on July 16. The classes will begin from July 20.

According to Maharaj K Pandit, Chairperson of the varsity's Admission Committee, 650 seats will allotted for the M.Phil students and around 850 seats will be allotted for PhD courses.

"The exact number of seats will be finalised soon. The number of seats, however, have been calculated roughly on the basis of professors' choice," Pandit said.

Though 83 applications have been received under the Others category, the fact is that most transgender aspirants choose to pursue their studies through correspondence.
The reason is the isolation and humiliation they feel on the campus and the authorities must take steps to make these students feel encouraged.
