The Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) officials exchanged old currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 denominations with the collected fare, a preliminary inquiry has suggested.

An inquiry into the revenue collected by the corporation between November 8 and November 20 revealed that illegal tenders worth over Rs 8 crore were deposited by the DTC, despite being given the orders to refrain from using them.

The Delhi government has now handed over the investigation to the Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB). "Preliminary inquiry suggests that senior officials were involved. We suspect that either the officials were trying to exchange their own black money or they exchanged it for someone else on a commission. Although this remains to be investigated," said Delhi Transport Minister Satyendar Jain.

Sources said the Delhi government, through a letter dated November 9, had ordered the DTC to immediately halt the usage and acceptance of old currency notes. The bus corporation, however, continued to deposit money in old currency.

"We received a complaint on November 20 that old currency notes were being exchanged with smaller denominations, and we immediately ordered an inquiry. The preliminary inquiry suggested that illegal exchange happened at almost half the depots in the city during a span of 12 days," Jain said.

After completing their daily trip, the conductor of each bus in the DTC hands over the fare collected to the officer incharge, who then verifies the amount. Once verified, the money is handed over to the cashier who then cross verifies the amount and deposits it at a bank branch, usually within the depot.

There are 43 depots in the national Capital, divided into four zones. Sources in the department suggested that more than 1.3 lakh illegal currency notes were exchanged at the depots.

"The biggest exchange took place at the depots in west zone, where more than 60,000 notes worth almost Rs 4 crore in old currency were exchanged with notes of smaller denominations, including coins," said a source in the DTC.
