After a year-long agitation, over 17,000 Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) employees finally have a reason to cheer. Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal, on Wednesday, approved a proposal by the government for the implementation of Seventh Central Pay Commission for the DTC.

The long-pending demand for the hike, which will be around 25 per cent, is expected to be implemented by next month.

"Approved the proposal, for implementing 7th Central Pay Commission in DTC. Urge DTC employees to make bus transport in Delhi the best," Baijal tweeted soon after giving his nod to the proposal.

Earlier this month, the proposal was sent to the LG's office after it was cleared by the finance department.

"The proposal have been approved. However, we are waiting for the official notification. It will be a big relief for the employees across categories," said a DTC spokesperson.

According to a senior government official, the notification is expected soon this week. The employees will be given the hike along with pending arrears from January 1, 2016.

Leader of Opposition, Vijender Gupta, who had supported the employees' agitation and raised the matter in the Assembly, said, "It is a big victory for all the employees. For the last one year we had supported the protest demonstrations by the employees. I had met the LG regarding the issue and had also presented a memorandum on the issue, " he said.

Gupta also said that there are a number of other issues which need immediate attention such as more standard buses.

"In the two and a half years of the AAP government, nothing has been done in the transport department. The DTC in particular has become a defunct body," said Gupta.

Analysis

The DTC has been beset by losses, at one point, running into Rs 3 crore every day. The fact that workers will get a pay hike will not improve matters as the main components of the costs, according to a DTC report, were salaries to employees
