A group of drunk men thrashed a police constable, and verbally abused two others, after almost ramming their vehicle into a police barricade in Masoodpur late on Monday night.

Constables Mohammad Alam, Prithwiraj, and Sushil were on the picket duty near the Malik Hotel. Around 11pm, an-over speeding Skoda car, being driven in a rash and negligent manner, came near the picket and almost rammed into the barricades. The driver somehow applied the brakes at the last moment.

“The officers warned the driver who was accompanied by three other people,” said a police officer. The accused, however, started verbally abusing the constables and a heated argument ensued. One of the youths then attacked Constable Alam, who sustained injuries on his left knee. All of the accused were in an inebriated condition.

The constables alerted the nearby police station and called for additional help, but the accused managed to flee from the spot. The officers, however, noted down the car number and the police are currently identifying the owner of the vehicle. Several teams have been constituted to nab the accused. The police will also go through the CCTV footage from the area to get more clues.

A case under sections 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 332 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered in this regard at the Vasant Kunj (South) police station.
