Drunk man drives car on footpath, kills two in West Delhi's Rajouri Garden area

The accused, who was in an inebriated state, was arrested from the spot and was found to be driving without a licence.

A 23-year-old software engineer ran his car over four persons sleeping on a footpath in west Delhi's Rajouri Garden area in the wee hours of Sunday, which left two of them dead and two battling for their lives, the police said. The accused, who was in an inebriated state, was arrested from the spot and was found to be driving without a licence.

According to the police, the accused has been identified as Devesh, a BCA graduate working at a software firm in Gurugram. A medical examination has confirmed that he was under the influence of alcohol.

The police said that the incident took place at around 4:30 am on Sunday. All victims were sleeping on the pavement of Ring Road in front of ESI hospital. The four were rushed to the hospital where the doctor declared two of them brought dead on arrival.

The police said that the deceased have been identified as 50-year-old Noora, and Shukla alias Krishan Dubey. Two others identified as Ram Singh (55) and Manoj (35) have received grievous injuries.

Ram Singh told the police that he has woke up to shock when a Honda Civic car crushed them.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Monika Bhardwaj said that they have arrested the driver and have seized the car in accidental condition from the spot. The further investigation is underway.

"During interrogation, Devesh said that he was driving from Paschim Vihar towards the airport where he was supposed to meet a friend. He was drunk and was driving at a high speed. He lost control and ended up driving it over the footpath where the four were sleeping," said Bharadwaj.

The police said the accused has been booked under IPC Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), which attracts a maximum jail term of 10 years.
