The Delhi government acted against the water mafia and sealed four borewells, six tankers from Sangam Vihar and Devali on Friday. A team of officers from the revenue department, Delhi Police, BSES and Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) visited the area.

"It was a part of our operation against water mafias in Devali and Sangam Vihar. We visited seven sites and at 4 sites, tankers were found filling water from bore wells. A total of four bore wells were sealed and 6 tankers were sent to the police station," said a senior officer.

According to the sources, at five sites underground water tanks were found. The pipelines were sealed and the owner was directed to destroy the tankers within 7 days. The team also checked the Jal board tankers. "The drivers were not having proper slips. They couldn't explain their destination. Hence, their slips were taken into custody," added the officer.

The Capital has been facing acute shortage of water. Recently, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking his intervention in ensuring sufficient water supply from Haryana as the Capital stares at a possible water crisis next week.

In his letter to PM Modi, Kejriwal said the city has been receiving 1,133 cusecs of water from Haryana since 1996, but recently, for the first time in 22 years, the neighbouring state has contested Delhi's right over this water and partially stopped the supply to the Capital.

"The Supreme Court has directed Haryana to keep supplying the earlier quantity of water till May 21, which means the state could reduce water supply after Monday," he said.

If that happens, it would create an "unprecedented shortage of water" in Delhi and could lead to "serious" law and order situation, the chief minister said.

Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court asked the AAP government on Thursday to justify its scheme of giving 20 kilo litres of free water across the board for domestic use. The observations came after the court's attention was drawn to this fact by amicus curiae Rakesh Khanna in a case relating to sharing of water between Haryana and Delhi.
