A dog was allegedly beaten to death on the Delhi Technological University (DTU) campus on Thursday, triggering a protest by animal rights activists on Friday. The entire incident of a guard, allegedly from DTU, beating the canine on its head repeatedly till it died, was recorded on a camera. The video of the lynching has surfaced on social media as well.

Activists have lodged a complaint in this regard at the Shahbad Dairy police station. Senior police officers said they were trying to ascertain the motive behind the shocking incident.

In the complaint, Saurabh Gupta of the People for Animals said: “We received a complaint that a dog had been killed in front of room number 110 of the university hostel. We were also told that a video of the act was shot and uploaded on the social media. When we reached the campus, initial inquiry revealed that a guard named Satish beat the dog on the instructions of some senior university officials. This a crime under section 429 (mischief by killing or maiming animals) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).”

Animal rights activist Ankita, one of the protesters, said the college administration told them that the dog had bitten a few people and was rabid. But when queried why animal rescuers were not called to manage the canine, the authorities had no answer.

“We have received the complaint and have seen the video as well. We have called the college staffers and guards for questioning. The content of the video and the complaint is being verified,” a senior police officer said.
