In yet another case of assault at a Delhi government hospital, a senior resident doctor at the Sushrut Trauma Centre was beaten up by the relatives of a patient in the wee hours on Saturday. The hospital staff alleged that the police officer who was called to take care of the matter also threatened and thrashed the doctor. The incident started after some of the family members did not get a blanket for themselves.

Around midnight on Friday, a road accident victim was brought to the hospital. While the doctors said that they tended to the patient till 3 am and after that kept him under observation, the family of eight people got impatient and started picking up fights with the hospital staff.

"The patient had come in for a femur bone fracture and was in a state of shock. His suturing had been done and after taking care of wounds for three straight hours, when the doctor finally kept him under observation at 3 am, the family members started to call out names and blamed the doctors for not doing their job," said Dr Ankur Sharma, general secretary, Resident Doctors' Association (RDA) of Maulana Azad Medical College and associated hospitals.

When the hospital staff called the police, the Assistant Sub-Inspector came drunk to the spot and started assaulting the doctors with the family members.

After several hours of intense atmosphere, the issue came to rest when the medical director intervened and contacted the North DCP to look into the matter.
