In appalling and sheer casualness of Delhi Police, a victim who was mercilessly thrashed by the cow vigilantes, was arrested. The attitude of police smacked of utter disdain when it did not bother to check the antecedents of the accused who gloated himself as an animal rights activist.  As the drama unfolded in the middle of a national highway, the cops lost their spine, became mute spectators as men thrashed the driver carrying, which later turned out to be not cows but buffaloes. It is very unfortunate that cops who were duty bound to protect the victim from rampant hooliganism, chose to look the other way even as these glorified goons took law in their hands under the shadow of an organisation that is often associated with Maneka Gandhi,  Minister of Women and Child Welfare. Making matters worse was the nonchalance with which the police, without bothering to conduct a thorough probe, branded the victim as accused and shrugged off their shoulders when confronted with the anomaly. They were equally apathetic when asked about the details of the men who created the ruckus, not even once trying to feign their ignorance, not even shamefacedly. And these are the cops who are entrusted with the sensitive job of protecting our lives, making the city safer for women and children. If this the kind of men  Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik has in his force, the ones who prefer to be blind when a hapless person is being victimised, he needs to take stock before such cops further sully the image of Delhi Police.
