Public meetings, janta darbar and muholla sabhas are once again happening frequently across the city.

The Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government has suddenly realised that they need to go back to what they did best: connecting with people, a skill that helped them win popularity among the masses and storm to power in Delhi. Since then, however, the government had fast been losing its interface with the public and this was reflected in the recent drubbing of the so-called people’s party in the MCD elections, the Punjab Assembly polls, and the constant infighting within the party.

Over the past two weeks, the Kejriwal government has been making desperate attempts at reconnecting with people at large, conducting meetings with Resident Welfare Associations, and traders in a bid to sell their achievements and regain lost ground.

The Kapil Mishra episode of allegations and counter-allegations of corruption had the common man confused, with the feeling of distrust growing even stronger. In another incident, Mishra was not allowed to meet the party chief and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal after the former raised anti-AAP slogans, again conveying a strong message that not all was well within the party.

For any new party that has formed a state government with a sweeping mandate, what should be talked about are its policies and development agenda. In AAP’s case, what is being promoted is a negative public image of its leaders as well as the growing internal rift within the party. Connecting with the masses could help the party shed this image.
