On January 24, parents of the 5-year-old Vivan had no clue what is brewing around them. Nitin Sharma, one of the accused in the kidnapping case, has revealed during interrogation that he and his aide Pankaj had laid a trap to take away the child from his father after the school van drops him home, but failed as the kid was picked up by his mother that day.

Senior police officers told DNA that on Wednesday, Sharma revealed that two of them had a fair idea about the money with the family. However, it was only in the fourth attempt that they successfully kidnapped the child.
According to the police, it was just a day before the kidnapping, that Nitin and Pankaj had laid a trap. "That day, the child's mother came to pick him up. Usually, it is his father who takes him home on a bike and the duo had planned to kidnap the child at gunpoint. However, the mother turned up to take the child home via the congested lanes of Shahadra and the duo could not gather the courage to execute the crime amid the crowd," said a senior police officer.

Police said that the trio used to deliver goods to the victim's residence and had come to know about the Rs 57 lakh deal that the boy's father had recently cracked. It was then that Sharma roped in Pankaj, who was recently released from jail, to plan the crime. The role of a woman has also surfaced and efforts to nab her are underway.

The accused had attempted to kidnap the child on January 22, 23 and 24. Sharma, who runs a general store often used to deliver items to Vivan's family. He even sent Pankaj at times and both were known to the family," the officer said.

Sharma further told the police that his lavish lifestyle forced him to take loans from several people. In order to pay his debts and to start his new business, he was in dire need of money. It was him who had arranged for the hideout in Sahibabad and made the ransom calls to the family in a woman's voice.
